On Thursday, the makers of Unni Mukundan’s ultra-violent action drama Marco took to social media to explain why the uncut version of the film could not be released on SonyLIV.

A note shared by the makers read, “Initially, We have planned to release ‘Marco’ uncut version for OTT. However, since various complaints were raised to the Ministry of Broadcasting, we were unable to proceed with that version. As a responsible production company, we have ensured compliance with all regulatory guidelines while maintaining the film’s core essence and cinematic experience.Hence we were forced to proceed with the same theatrical content on OTT also.”

It further read, “We are excited to bring Marco to a wider audience through SonyLIV and look forward to the continued support of our fans and viewers.”

Besides Unni Mukundan, Marco stars Siddique, Jagadish, Abhimanyu Thilakan, Kabir Duhan Singh, Anson Paul, Yukti Thareja, Ishaan Shoukath, Durva Thaker, Sreejith Ravi, Mathew Varghese, Shaji Shaahid, Ajit Koshy, Dinesh Prabhakar, Arjun Nandhakumar, Lishoy, Riyaz Khan, Meera Nair, Bindu Sanjeev, Sajitha Sreejith, Chithra Prasad and Suneesh Nambiar in pivotal roles.

Upon its release, Marcho received a mixed response from critics and audiences. While praised for its high-octane action sequences, stylish cinematography, and gripping background score, the film faced criticism for its lack of depth and originality in storytelling.

Despite the divided reception, Marcho emerged as a major box-office success. It debuted with an impressive Rs 10.8 crore worldwide on its first day, ranking as the fourth-highest opening for a Malayalam film in 2024. The film sustained its momentum, eventually becoming the highest-grossing A-rated Malayalam film of all time, with a worldwide collection of Rs 102.55 crore.
