Malayalam sci-fi mockumentary Gaganachari, starring K. B. Ganesh Kumar, Gokul Suresh, Aju Varghese and Anarkali Marikar in pivotal toles, is streaming on Manorama Max.
Set in Kerala in 2043, Gaganachari follows Victor Vasudevan Valaparambil (KB Ganesh Kumar), a seasoned ex-military officer turned alien hunter, and his two hilariously inept companions: Allan Jose Valaparambil (Gokul Suresh), Victor’s overconfident nephew, and Vaibhav Vydyanathan, a.k.a. Vibe (Aju Varghese), a quirky tech geek. Their bunker-based escapades take an unexpected turn when an alien (Anarkali Marikar) crash-lands into their lives.
Directed by Arun Chandu, Gaganachari released in theatres on June 21, 2024 to mixed reviews. The film went to earn Rs 2.46 crore at the worldwide box office, as per industry tracker Sacnilk.
Talking about the success of the film, Aju Varghese told The Hindu, “Arun Chandu comes up with whacky, crazy themes because of his exposure to world cinema. However, I wasn’t sure if people would understand the concept of a mockumentary. But the audience proved me wrong. Fahadh Faasil had said in an interview that we can experiment with anything in Malayalam cinema for the next five years. When a brilliant actor and producer like him makes such an observation, it can’t be taken lightly. I think Chandu was buoyed by those words and got the confidence to go ahead and release it.”
